How did I arrive at the commitment to run for office in the upcoming Municipal elections?
The atmosphere currently surrounding us is so hostile to culture that I felt a pressing urge to stand up and defend it.
What is this culture that I want to fight for?
For me, culture in its various forms is the very bedrock of humanity. And because there are myriad types of people, culture takes many shapes and forms too. This diversity is what allows us to grow as human beings. Culture nourishes and inspires us with experiences and epiphanies. It enlightens us and guides us onwards on our personal path. It enriches our existenceand helps us navigate through adversities both big and small. In addition, the culture branch provides employment and income for a prominent number of trained and creative professionals.
At the very core of culture we find imagination, without which there would be zero innovation. As a working drummer I am accustomed to assuming the role of a member in a collective often bigger than the sum of its parts. In this capacitymy task is distinct: To make the big picture fuller and clearer. Musical know-how and technical expertise aside, reaching this goal requires discretion, perseverance and resilience.
Living in the moment is important, if not paramount, but almost as vital is locating the balance in between adaptability and assertiveness. Giving in and following others often results in the rhythm going off. And when that occurs, the fingers invariably point at the timekeeper. This underscores the importance of following one's own vision. Whatever the circumstances, sticking to your own guns should always assist in making the music and the ensemble better.
For me, the essence of a freelance musician consists not only of creativity and craftsmanship, but also of absorbing new abilities and keeping one's existing skillset constantly updated. Making art aside, it also requires driving a van and carrying gear around at all hours, in all sorts of weather conditions. Travelling here, there & everywhere in Finland with countless artists and groups I have had the opportunity to hear the stories of many kinds of people from all walks of life.
Years upon years of praxis from performing with the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra at the Tampere Hall and with varying lineups at the Vastavirta-klubi has taught me to view these entities as complementing pieces of the same big puzzle of live music. Both of them, and everything in between, is equally important and meaningful.
Whenever I am not responsible for transporting instruments around, I travel mainly by bicycle. This is why I regard equal opportunities for all forms of traffic as a cornerstone of sustainable future city planning.
As a teacher I strive to present children and youngsters with tools and facilities that enable them to keep an open mind, stay inquisitive and assimilate new skills. Should they choose the path of becoming a musician, a vital part of my task is to make sure their self-image is as sound as the base for their opportunities of success.
My experience of renovating old buildings has taught me an important lesson: Tearing something down makes sense only when you are certain that the replacement will work better than the original solution.
Investing in education and preventive healthcare is clever in all circumstances whereas making cuts to them will come and haunt us all sooner rather than later. The faster someone gets the assistance they need, the better their chances of recovering and flourishing are. In addition, this is also much more cost-effective for the society at large.
This is the baseline for my resolution to run in the upcoming Municipal elections. Even though I have no former practice in politics, I believe that learning by doing is a valid concept in this arena as well.
Choosing to collaborate with the Left Alliance was self-evident because the party's value system mirrors mine very closely. I care about the workers' rights, equality, taking care of the needy, justice, nature conservation and culture in all its shapes and forms.
